Why Your Manifestation Isn’t Working: The Trap of Unserious Manifesting

Do you want abundance, or do you just want control?

I’ve been asking this question a lot lately to those who claim to be on a path of self-discovery. And time and time again, I’ve found that most people don’t actually want abundance—they want control. Not over themselves, but over every circumstance, every outcome, and every person in their life. And yet, they come seeking intuitive guidance as if their true intentions won’t be seen. It’s confounding. If you don’t want to change, if you don’t want to be challenged, why seek wisdom at all?

Millennials, like the generations before them, carry the weight of narcissism disguised as self-awareness. This is why it’s called a generational pattern, because without real healing, you inevitably become what shaped you. The difference now is that many believe their education, their access to information, or their acts of rebellion insulate them from their parents’ conditioning. But knowledge isn’t healing. Defiance isn’t transformation.

In 2023, I led A Daughter’s Sabbatical, a group exploring the mother wound. Unsurprisingly, the number one demand was accountability from their mothers. “They were older. They should have known better.” A sentiment mostly voiced by older millennials who have yet to experience motherhood themselves, but one that didn’t change even among the mothers in the group. It became clear. Most millennials don’t actually understand generational patterns, nor are they breaking the ones that have the tightest hold on them. Instead, they’re demanding change from others while refusing to examine where they, too, are bound.

The same thing happens in manifestation. People claim they want abundance but refuse to change their patterns to align with divine order. They see synchronicities but call them coincidences. They receive intuitive downloads but dismiss them as random thoughts. They pray for clarity and then ignore the signs. And when nothing changes, they convince themselves that spirituality is a scam or that they are somehow spiritually defective.

The truth is, abundance requires surrender. You can’t manipulate your way into divine alignment. You can’t force timing. You can’t hold onto every fear and excuse and expect the universe to move mountains on your behalf. What you can do is take accountability for how you stand in your own way. You can acknowledge that your skepticism is not intellectual superiority, but fear of what might happen if you actually believed. And you can decide, right now, whether you’re ready to receive—or if you’d rather cling to the illusion of control and call it wisdom.

So where do you start? You start by being honest. Do you actually want change, or do you just want validation? Are you willing to do something different, or do you just want someone to confirm that your resistance is justified? Real manifestation requires participation. It requires listening, trusting, and moving in ways that don’t always make logical sense. It requires unlearning what keeps you small and releasing the false comfort of thinking you have it all figured out.

You don’t have to be fearless, but you do have to be willing. You don’t have to be perfect, but you do have to be honest. If you want abundance, real abundance, then let go. Because the universe is not withholding from you, you are withholding from yourself…
